Background

In this globalization era English is an important language. A mastery of English enables people to access many kinds of information since most information in the world is presented in English. A lot of books, journals, articles on science, technology, or academics are written in English. Moreover, the internet which enables people to access any kind of information in a short time, also uses English. Therefore, not knowing English means people will have difficulties in getting information. Therefore, to understand written information, people need to have a good ability in English.

People have to study English when they are still young. As a student should take a course especially take a Private English Course. Because take a Private English Course really affect the English proficiency of students at school. Due to that, I choose this topic “ Learning English At Private English Course Affect The English Proficiency Of Students At School “ as my research. And I choose this topic because I find many difference in life that students who take an English course have better quality than the students who don’t take an English course.

Methodology

The design / method of this research is “ Ex Post Facto “. I have not manipulate the Independent Variable ( IV ). From the title I get an idea that English proficiency is Dependent Variable ( DV ) and students is Independent Variable ( IV ) and how I will conduct my research. I will compare private course students and non private course students. It is conducted to know the correlation between the students take an English course and the students study English in a class without taking an English course.

-         English Proficiency        : Dependent Variable ( DV )

-         Students                       : Independent Variable ( IV )

® Private Course Students.

® Non Private Course Students.

I get the subjects from MAN 3 Malang. I take six students for my research. Students A, B, C are private course students and students D, E, F are non private course students. I choose MAN 3 Malang students for my research because I really interested with the students, the students’ motivation of English, and I think MAN 3 Malang is the best school to do my research. Besides, from that school I can observe fluently in getting the data.

In order to compare the quality of students who take an English course and the students who don’t take an English course. In my research I used students’ compositions as an instrument. I ask the students to make subject’s self report. Besides, I also told them to learn a list of ten English words and to describe any special ways they had to help them retain the items.

For subject’s self report, a self report is a kind of personal document which has an important role in identifying learning strategies. Learning strategies are identified through a self report. Self report, in this case was in the form of narrative paragraphs which contain subject’s experiences in learning English. The subjects was free to write their experiences I learning English including their strategies during learning process. They had to describe how they have come to their level now, an advanced learner.

For memorizing English words, in this point the subjects were asked to describe any special techniques they used to help them in performing both language skills ( listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and language components (pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary). Surely, the students that take an English course will get more knowledge than doesn’t take an English course. For instance, the subjects were asked to imagine that their teacher told them to learn a list of ten English words and to describe any special ways they had to help them retain the items. Prior the interviews, the interviewees were told that they could respond in whichever language they preferred, English or Indonesia; no testing would be involved; the results of the study would not affect their grades; and their participation would help them get to know more about themselves as a learner and enabled them to consider how their learning could be made more effective. Each interview was recorded with the interviewee’s permission so that the interview could concentrate on elicitation process and distracted by detailed note taking. The interview was done several times in different situations in which the subject felt comfortable.

The research compared the scores of the students that take an English course and the students that don’t take an English course.

Some steps are done in analyzing the data :

1)      The first step is calculate the scores.

2)      The second step is finding the mean of scores gained by two compared groups ( signed X1 and X2 that are Private Course Students and Non Private Course Students ).

Ø       For Private Course Students.

Ø        For Non Private Course Students.

3)      The third step is compare the difference between each scores.

4)      The last step is finding the highest scores.
