| Term | Definition |
| a posteriori | Inductive knowledge that comes only through experience and testing. |
| a priori | Deductive knowledge that is independent of experience - thus 2+2=4 is true everywhere. |
| accidental sampling | Menurut Sugiyono (2004:77) adalah mengambil responden sebagai sampel berdasarkan kebetulan, yaitu siapa saja yang secara kebetulan bertemu dengan peneliti dapat digunakan sebagai sampel bila orang yang kebetulan ditemui cocok sebagai sumber data. Teknik ini biasanya dilakukan karena keterbatasan waktu, tenaga, dan dana sehingga tidak dapat mengambil sampel yang besar dan jauh. Keuntungan dari pada teknik ini adalah terletak pada ketepatan peneliti memilih sumber data sesuai dengan variabel yang diteliti (Arikunto, 2002).

| Alternative Hypothesis | the alternative hypothesis for chi square is that the two variables are related to each other (same as research hypothesis). |
| Alternative hypothesis (H1) | The statement that is believed to describe the relationship between an independent and dependant variable. H1 is retained when the null hypothesis is rejected. H1 Reflects the operationalization of the research hypothesis e.g. there is a relationship between crime and population density. |
| Analysis of Public Records | Using data collected by government, industry or other organizations for social science analysis. |
| Analytic statements | Statements which are true by definition (vs. synthetic statements). e.g. Roses are flowers. |
| Analyze | to break into component parts and study those parts to gain a better understanding of the whole. |
| Androcentric | The tendency for men to unconsciously bias perceptions in uniquely male ways. |
| Antecedent Variable | Variable that is causally prior to both independent and dependent variables. |
| Applied Research | 1. The kind of research usually performed by consultants or HR professionals. Typically motivated by the need to solve a specific problem in a particular organization. 2. Contrasts with basic research. |
| Atomism | Things can be studied by reducing them to their smallest parts (and the whole is the sum of the parts) |
| Attrition | A reduction in the number of participants during the course of a study. If more participants withdraw from one group than another group, this can introduce bias and threaten the internal validity of the research. |
| Audit trail | The systematic presentation of material gathered within a naturalistic study that allows others to follow and audit the researcher's thinking and conclusions about the data. |
