| Probability sample | Type of sample in which every individual in the population has a known, nonzero, chance of being selected in the sample. |
| Probability Sampling | Any sampling scheme in which the probability of choosing each individual is the same (or at least known, so it can be readjusted mathematically to be equal). Also called random sampling. Probability samples are more costly to obtain, but are more accurate, and they allow the researcher to calculate the amount of error she can expect. There are three major kinds of probability sampling: simple random sampling (SRS), stratified sampling, and cluster sampling. |
| Qualitative data | 1. Information gathered in narrative (nonnumeric) form (e.g. a transcript of an unstructured interview). 2. Information gathered in numeric form. |
| Quasi-experiment | A type of experimental design where random assignment to groups is not employed for either ethical or practical reasons, but certain methods of control are employed and the independent variable is manipulated. |
| Questionnaire | A formal, written, set of closed-ended and open-ended questions that are asked of every respondent in the study. The questions may be self-administered, or interviewer-administered. A source of data. |
| Quine Tesis | An empirical test can never falsify an isolated hypothesis -- it actually challenges the whole knowledge system of which it is a part. |
