These is glossary of research key terms. This glossary is intended as an aid to
professionals and non-professionals who find the world of research
somewhat intimidating. While it is impossible to cover all the terms
that can be confusing, this document briefly defines some of the more
common terms and concepts. | |

| Explanation | 1. a term used the analysis of the relationship between three variables, the elaboration model, to refer to the situation where a control variable causes the previous relationship between the independent and dependant variable to disappear. An example would be where the sub groups divided by the control "race" no longer showed a difference between male and females in terms of wages. 2. outcome of elaboration in which the control variable reduces the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. |
| Exploratory Phase | The exploratory phase of a study is where you try to figure out (usually qualitatively) what is going on. There are three basic objectives: (1) learn the lingo of your respondents; (2) learn the background context within which everything happens; and (3) develop a set of testable theories about what is going on. |
| Exploratory Study | Also known as "inductive" or "theory-building". In this kind of study, we don't begin with a theory. Instead, we collect data that, after analysis, we will use to develop a theory. After we develop the theory, we might then design a study to test the theory. |
| External validity | refers to the degree to which the results of a study are generalisable beyond the immediate study sample and setting to other samples and settings. |
| Extraneous variable | A variable that interferes with the relationship between the independent and dependent variables and which therefore needs to be controlled for in some way. |
