These is glossary of research key terms. This glossary is intended as an aid to
professionals and non-professionals who find the world of research
somewhat intimidating. While it is impossible to cover all the terms
that can be confusing, this document briefly defines some of the more
common terms and concepts. | |

| Term | Definition |
| Qualitative data | 1. Information gathered in narrative (nonnumeric) form (e.g. a transcript of an unstructured interview). 2. Information gathered in numeric form. |
| Quasi-experiment | A type of experimental design where random assignment to groups is not employed for either ethical or practical reasons, but certain methods of control are employed and the independent variable is manipulated. |
| Questionnaire | A formal, written, set of closed-ended and open-ended questions that are asked of every respondent in the study. The questions may be self-administered, or interviewer-administered. A source of data. |
| Quine Tesis | An empirical test can never falsify an isolated hypothesis -- it actually challenges the whole knowledge system of which it is a part. |
| Quine-Duhem thesis | You cannot test a single hypothesis on its own, since each is part of linked set of theories. |
| Quota sample | Type of nonprobability sample which assigns interviewers quotas on preselected variables. |
| Quota sampling | 1. a non-probability sampling strategy where the researcher identifies the various strata of a population and ensures that all these strata are proportionately represented within the sample to increase its representativeness. 2. A sampling scheme similar to stratified sampling in which you first divide the population into classes (such as males and females) and then obtain a haphazard sample within each class. |
